Advise and Guidance NVQ Level 3

A flexible syllabus, enabling training to be tailored to meet specific needs of employers & their employees. It gives participants the opportunity to build and develop more in depth skills within a business environment.

Who will benefit?:

This qualification is for guidance practitioners working in either careers guidance (employment assistants); educational guidance (e.g. student services staff in colleges and universities) or adult guidance (e.g. employment services staff, or practitioners working in LSC adult guidance networks). At level 3 you are likely to be working mainly with individual clients, with complex work requiring much autonomy in dealing with each case, but with supervision from a line manager. At level 4 you will need to have a case load of clients which you manage and to take part in networking activities

Entry requirements:

You will need to show that you are working in an advice and guidance capacity to enable you to evidence your NVQ. At Level 4 you will be asked to discuss your application with the course leader.

Course Aims:

The aim of this qualification is to recognise the skills and competences of candidates in the workplace. The qualification provides individuals with an opportunity to demonstrate the skills and knowledge needed for a career in advice and guidance. The units encompass a broad range of competencies from the sector.

Six units must be completed for the full NVQ. Each candidate must complete the three mandatory units, plus three optional units.

Mandatory units:

  • Establish communication with clients for advice and guidance
  • Support clients to make use of the advice and guidance service
  • Review own contribution to the service

Optional units:

  • Develop interactions with advice and guidance clients
  • Interact with clients using a range of media
  • Assist advice and guidance clients to decide on a course of action
  • Prepare clients through advice and guidance for the implementation of a course of action
  • Assist clients through advice and guidance to review their achievement of a course of action
  • Negotiate on behalf of advice and guidance clients
  • Liaise with other services
  • Enable advice and guidance clients to access referral opportunities
  • Provide and maintain information materials for use in the service
  • Facilitate learning in groups
  • Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
